At High Top Roofing, we get a lot of questions about the hail storms that hit the Union County area in September of 2023.
Many of our customers want to know if they can file an insurance claim for hail damage from that storm.
We've done many free inspections related to this storm and we've found that very few of these homes have enough damage to support an insurance claim.
Why?
Because insurance companies typically won't approve claims for hail storms unless the hail is at least 1/4 inch in size.
Most of the hail that fell in that storm was pea sized and was too small to justify an insurance claim.
Just to be clear, we're on your side and we're happy to help you by working with insurance companies to get your claim paid.
However, we don't want to waste your time if our experience tells us there's no chance an insurance company will approve the claim.
That said, we've seen situations where some claims have been paid out by insurance companies for that September, 2023 storm.
We believe that has happened for several reasons:
- Some out of town storm chaser roofing companies have been overly aggressive with the insurance companies and have made the case that the velocity of the hail - not the size of the hail caused the roof damage. We've even heard reports of some of these roofing companies going up on roofs and intentionally creating some shingle damage to support insurance claims like this.
- We've also learned of situations where insurance companies have relied on photos instead of sending out an insurance adjuster to physically inspect the roof. That has sometimes resulted in a successful claim that might not otherwise have been paid.
So while most of the hail damage from that storm should not have resulted in a successful claim, there are rare exceptions where claims from that storm have sometimes been paid.
